Big Read 2017: Station Eleven

We’re joining the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning and Literary Cleveland for the NEA Big Read 2017! This large, community read projectfunded by the National Endowment for the Artsfeatures Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel.

The Big Read includes a kick-off and finale, book discussions, upcycling/maker programs, graphic novel and creative writing workshops for people of all ages, and more.

You don’t need to read Station Eleven to participate, but we encourage everyone to contact their local library, find copies of Station Eleven and join the Big Read while enjoying related workshops!

Kick-Off: Enjoy a community meet and greet, a classic Shakespearean monologue and a live music performance by In2ative. Don’t miss it!

Upcycle/Maker Workshops for Youth

In a post-pandemic society, production is halted and survivors must get creative to survive. In these workshops, participants will have the opportunity to repurpose and upcycle common items into new, useful products for a post-apocalyptic world. Targeted Audience: Children ages 6-18 years old, especially middle schoolers.

Creative Writing for Graphic Novels Workshops for Teens

Youth will work with Lake Erie Ink to learn the basics of writing a graphic novel. Once they have created their story line, they will have the opportunity to work with a visual artist to illustrate their story.

Adult Discussion/Creative Writing Workshops

Join Literary Cleveland to discuss Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, then learn how to channel your own ideas into a creative short story. Literary Cleveland’s capable instructors will guide participants through the writing process as they let their creativity flow. All are welcome. Reading of Station Eleven is not required.
