Designing a Better Cleveland

Designing a Better Cleveland is a pocket-sized guide to urban design and how public spaces are created in the city. Written by Steven Litt, art and architecture critic for The Plain Dealer, and published in partnership with Cleveland Public Art, the booklet gives 16 fundamental principles for how great cities are designed, built and enjoyed.

Designed by local graphic design studio RUL, Designing a Better Cleveland was an outgrowth of a program called "Civic Design & Inspired Infrastructure," which is part of the Library's annual series "Spectrum: The Lockwood Thompson Dialogues." This program featured Alex Washburn, chief urban designer in New York City; Fred Salvucci, MIT engineering professor and mastermind of Boston's Big Dig projects; and Litt discussing how cities can bring together form and function to ensure their future success.
