A New Approach to Summer Reading Club

The Summer Reading Club has always been a hallmark of Cleveland Public Library. In 2012, however, the focus changed from a concentration on the number of books read to one of participation and learning outcomes. A different approach was necessary in order to change strategies.

So what was different? First, kick-off events were hosted at the Rockport and Woodland Branches to create a sense of excitement about the program. Third-party support was solicited from both NASA and Spring Mist Farms, a local animal organization, to provide a unique experience for young people living in the city.

Secondly, the Club took on the theme of “Feed Your Mind: READ”. The focus of reading and programming was aimed at learning how to grow, eat and recognize healthy food. Learning to live a healthy lifestyle aligned with the City of Cleveland’s Year of Local Food, part of the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative. | MORE »
