Alta Weiss was pitching for the semi-pro Vermilion Independents when she made her debut at League Park on October 2, 1907, with 3,182 fans in attendance. In 1908, "Miss Weiss", also known as "the girl wonder" in the newspapers, was pitcher for the Cleveland-based Weiss All Stars who barnstormed throughout Ohio and Kentucky. Weiss went on to practice medicine but continued to play ball into the 1920s.
Read contemporary accounts from across the country of Weiss's prowess in the Sept. 23, 1907 and June 15, 1908 issues of The Spokane Press as well as other newspapers from 1907 to 1909.
