Langston Hughes Collection
Langston Hughes (1902-1967), poet, columnist, and novelist. The first four series contain correspondence from a wide range of friends, fans, publishers, and family members. The following seven series contrail a variety of writings: general writings (stories, articles, plays, book-length collections of poems); poems (individual and small groups); song lyrics; newspapers columns; translations by Hughes; printed appearances of Hughes’s works, and writings by others.
The remaining series contain items documenting Hughes’s personal life: photographs tracing his travels, friendships and lectures; materials documenting public appearances; personal papers containing passports, scrapbooks, educational records, engagement books, among other types; a small group of Hughes family papers; financial and legal records; printed ephemera and clippings documenting Hughes’s works and lectures; a group of periodicals collected by Hughes; materials removed from printed items (cataloged separately); records relating to the World Festival of Negro Arts (held in Dakar, Senegal, in 1966); and graphic materials, such as artworks and postcards.
