John Sykes Fayette

Rev. John Sykes Fayette, Class of 1836. Rev. Sykes (pictured here with his wife) is cited as being the first documented African-American student to attend Western Reserve College. The College was then located in Hudson, Ohio. Rev. Sykes, who excelled in mathematics, was a strong abolitionist. He graduated in 1836 and spent another year in Hudson as a theological student. After graduation, Rev. Sykes maintained a Methodist ministry in Barton, C.W., and elsewhere in Canada.
