Jesse R. Farley Collection on the Soul Stirrers

The collection consists of four black and white photographs of Jesse Farley and the Soul Stirrers and is dated 1960-1982.
Jesse Farley was part of the gospel vocal group Soul Stirrers that was formed in 1935. Farley was the manager of the group and the only original member left by the time the 1960s rolled around. The Soul Stirrers took the jubilant gospel music and turned created a more expressive, emotional, and rhythmic style, which paved the way for doo-wop and rhythm and blues. With this new style, the Soul Stirrers were able to take the gospel music out of the church and perform for a national audience, including USO shows and performances for Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill during World War II.
