Eugene Bailey Papers

Eugene Bailey was an African-American from Cleveland, Ohio, who attended Virginia State College for Negroes, excelling in athletics. Bailey became physical education director at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Va. and then enlisted in the Navy at the start of World War II. In 1942, he was killed in an explosion at the Norfolk Navy Yard. The collection includes correspondence, certificates, memorabilia, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the life and death of Bailey, especially as a youth and young adult during the Great Depression.
