Charlise was placed in the “slow class” at her aging urban school and yet she developed a drive to succeed. She read tirelessly, and she searched among rundown neighborhood bars for the wayward father who had sparked her young intellect and then disappeared. Her mother provided her five children with food and shelter through the most menial of jobs, and she also exposed them to art, drama, and the belief that learning could change how they saw themselves and their city. Then Charlise landed a lucky break–a scholarship to a prestigious prep school in a wealthy suburb. At her prep school Charlise met dauting new challenges. Crossing between two worlds, she felt at home in neither.
