As part of its ongoing investment in Cleveland’s Plan for Transforming Schools, of which the goal is to ensure every child in Cleveland attends a high-quality school and every neighborhood has a multitude of great schools from which families can choose, The George Gund Foundation commissioned award-winning Boston photographer Lisa Kessler to capture the pulse of public schools in Cleveland today. For two weeks, she immersed herself in district and partnering charter schools across Cleveland, capturing the unbridled enthusiasm, hard work, and sense of community among students, teachers and parents.
The complete photographic exhibit titled “Changing Minds” will be showcased at the Cleveland Public Library’s Louis Stokes Wing from September 2 through October 28. The title reflects how Public schools in Cleveland are dispelling myths, breaking down barriers, and re-picturing education.

Humor is a powerful weapon for creating a forum for discussion. Editorial cartoons often contain a political or social message that relates to events, personalities, and situations.
The exhibit will feature highlights from the Cleveland Public Library’s collection that includes original illustrations, graphic novels, historical books on political cartoons, and other materials from several departments at Main Library. The illustrations will include themes based on politics, ethics, propaganda, reform, comic relief, social commentary, patriotism, and solidarity.
