Rice Branch’s precedents were a school library at Harvey Rice School and then a storefront on Buckeye Road. It became a branch in 1927 and a building was then built on East 116th Street. The new Rice Branch (located at 11535 Shaker Blvd.) is an example of true community partnership. Thanks to the effort of many, construction of a new facility concluded in early 2010. Inside, high ceilings and wood beams evoke sophistication and warmth. Outside, red brick pays homage to the original branch design while a curtain of tall glass reflects the images of the neighborhood.
Located in the Buckeye-Larchmere neighborhood near Shaker Square, Rice is surrounded by an active arts community. The Rice meeting room is used frequently for art displays and musical performances. Rice features a well-balanced collection for all ages, with a growing Teen/Young Adult Collection in a location dedicated to that age group. In the Learning Center, there are CMSD Textbooks and a strong collection of educational books for GED and TABE. Rice also has a large Audio/Video Collection and a wide selection of magazines that are extremely popular.
The Rice Learning Center seats approximately 18 people in an environment ideal for educating. Here, GED instruction is provided twice per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), while walk-in tutoring is available 5 days a week (Monday-Friday). Math tutoring is available on Saturdays. The Learning Center is equipped with a laptop, projector, and an interactive SmartBoard and can be reserved for open group meetings and small gatherings.
