Main Library, 325 Superior Ave – 2nd floor

Exhibit Dates: Through December 31, 2016

Join us as we proudly present an exhibit spanning a variety of themes of humor from the library’s collection of editorial illustrations.  Editorial cartoons often contain a political or social message that relates to events, personalities, and situations.  This exhibit celebrates editorial illustrations from our collection and the variety of topics using humor to help facilitate a forum for discussion.  Several of our library departments’ collections contain a variety of source material that contributed to the success of this exhibit.  Upon visiting Cleveland Public Library and viewing this exhibit, be sure to check out the various departments from which the exhibit was made possible from History, Foreign Literature, Map Collection, Literature, Sports Center, Fine Arts, and Special Collections.  The library has many original drawings, books, as well as periodicals of wonderful political and social commentary magazines.

Cleveland has a rich history of producing such delightful creative works including more well-known creations such as Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson, and American Splendor by Harvey Pekar.  While more locally recognized talent includes illustrators James H. Donahey and Edward Kuekes from Cleveland, and regional flair of Billy Ireland from Columbus.  These local illustrators were inspired by the likes of Thomas Nast and William Hogarth, and influenced by PUNCH Magazine and L’Assiette au Beurre.  Cleveland Public Library is proud to have many of these sources in their collections.
