    Lunar New Year: Year of the Snake

    On Saturday, March 16 we will celebrate Lunar New Year and the Year of the Snake. Our downtown location at 325 Superior Avenue is where the fun will begin at 10:00 a.m. This year’s family entertainment will feature youth and adults performing a number of classic, celebratory dances. In addition, traditional Chinese musical performances by local academies will be highlighted in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium located in the lower level of the Louis Stokes Wing.

    Lunar New Year: Chinese Zodiac WheelA roving balloon twister will travel throughout the Library entertaining children and adults alike. Chinese calligraphy will be demonstrated in the lower level of the Louis Stokes wing. While you’re there be sure to check out the live snake exhibit! Experts will be on hand to demonstrate and answer questions.

    Although most activities take place in the Louis Stokes Wing, guests can participate in a Library-wide treasure hunt focused on the Year of the Snake. Animal entertainer, Jungle Bob, will be in the Youth Services Department, 4th floor of the Main Building with various live reptiles to view.

    Traditional culinary fare can be sampled from the Siam Café. Other refreshments and a variety of Chinese treats will be available. This special Chinese celebration is free and open to the public.

    10:00-4:00 SSSSPECTACULAR TREASURE HUNT.  Library-wide adventure (MAIN AND LSW).  Test your sleuthing skills and visit eleven subject departments looking for answers.  Winners will be drawn and prizes awarded after  4:00 pm in LSW lobby.  Submit your completed Treasure Hunt form by the entrance of the LSW Auditorium.  Winners must be present to claim prizes.

    10:00-11:00. LUNAR NEW YEAR CRAFTS AND STORYTIME.  YOUTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT (4TH FLOOR MAIN). Visit with your youngsters and our staff will help commerate the Year of the Snake.

    11:00-11:15. YOUTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT. MUSICAL PERFORMANCE BY KELLY LIN.  Young musician will play traditional Chinese zither (guzheng) for our young guests.

    11:30-12:30. JUNGLE BOB. YOUTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT (4TH FLOOR MAIN).  Be amazed by Jungle Bob and his menagerie of wild friends.

    12:30-1:30. FLOWER THE CLOWN, MASTER BALLOON TWISTER.  YOUTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT (4TH FLOOR MAIN) Prepare to be awed by the skillful and amusing talents of our guest entertainer.

    2:00-3:15. LUNAR NEW YEAR PROGRAM. LSW AUDITORIUM. FAMILY FRIENDLY ENTERAINMENT.  Spectacular display of traditional Asian music and dance.

    “OUR ZOO TO YOU”.  Meet Rosie the Boa up close and personal. Dont’ worry, Rosie did not come alone, she brought along some slithery friends and aquaintances.

    CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY. 2:00-5:00. Have your name printed in Chinese characters.
