For the pasCIA Art Work 009t three years, Professor Barbara Stanczak, of the Cleveland Institute of Art, challenges her Foundation Design students to create a unique chess set or artists’ book using materials and tools they are unfamiliar with. Before beginning their projects, the students visited the Cleveland Public Library’s John G. White Chess Collection and Special Collections Department to see a variety of chess sets and artists’ books. Nine weeks later the students’ works are on display for public viewing in the Special Collections Department on the 3rd floor of the Main Library.

    Chess Sets
While teaching her Foundation Design course over the last several years, she has had her students research various chess sets and the history of the game in order to design their own chess sets for a class project.  They are required to create a set which includes 32 figures, a playing board, and a game storage piece.

The objectives of the course are as follows:
    •    Have fun and fantasy in designing unique chess figures
    •    Become aware of the 3000 year history of a game
    •    Explore new materials for versatile execution
    •    Design figures within the restriction of "Theme and Variation"
    •    Learn to work within a system of control and multiplication
    •    Learn to construct a fitting container in an additive process
    •    Solidify and reinforce proper wood working skills

Artists’ Books -- The book as art and visual experience
    A book is:

an idea. – It’s evolution and resolution …
a perceived poem, a visual unfolding of an idea…
a poetic, visual abstraction, symbolic – not literal …
a contained unit of visual images…
            an adventure!

    CIA Art Work 014

    A book is:

a metamorphosis of forms, surfaces, materials, emotions, impressions…
a comprehensive composite of many related parts…
a fixed structure of changes, unalterable in its sequence…
            a living, dynamic possibility!
    CIA Art Work 016
    A book is:

            a timed sculpture,

a revelation of in time and over time…

a tactile, physical, participatory, intimate experience…

a personal exploration of time and space…

a structure with dimensions of surface, volume, experience, and insight…

    CIA Art Work 013
    A book is:

            perceived music…
a self-referential entity, ever changing but belonging to one theme…
a controlled transformation of sensations, carrying you along…
            an harmonic, ordered, uplifting reflection…
            a universal, shared vision.
