    LIVES AND MUSIC IN JAZZ

    Biographies can tell the story of a musician’s life and/or discuss their music. The finest jazz biographies are well-researched, insightful, and readable. Some recent biographies seem to get caught up in making a point or, while useful in supplying information on overlooked musicians, are a tough read. Some writers attempt to focus on one significant part of a musician’s career. Here are some of the better recent titles plus some classic jazz biographies. Most try to deal with the music as well as the life. Also included here are autobiographies, specialized studies, pictorial works, and collections of interviews and essays.

    CIA Art Work 009For the past three years, Professor Barbara Stanczak, of the Cleveland Institute of Art, challenges her Foundation Design students to create a unique chess set or artists’ book using materials and tools they are unfamiliar with and brings them to the Special Collections Department for inspiration.

    One of the unique and interesting collections housed at the Cleveland Public Library is the East India Company Manuscript Collection. The British East India Company was formed by a group of London merchants through an Elizabethan royal charter in 1600 under the name Governor and Company of Merchants of London trading with the East Indies.
