Every Little Step Cover Art"Life Imitates art far more than art imitates life."  

Oscar Wilde's famous quote spawned an aesthetic philosophical movement and has been a cultural reference of the 20th century ever since it was made.  Documentaries have far surpassed the intial offerings of public service announcements, and wildlife surveys.  The evolution of the documentary genre portrays rich human subjects, exploring themes of humanity and culture under the direction and guise of directors with vision and purpose.

Scorecard Last week, on January 17th, 2008, chess genius Robert "Bobby" Fischer died in Iceland of kidney failure. The Cleveland Public Library's Special Collections Department has several items relating to this prominent figure in the world of chess. Interested patrons may come view these unique items during the library's regular business hours.

I was Tortured in the Pasadena Jailhouse! by Bobby Fischer. This is a very rare booklet self-published by Fischer concerning his treatment after he was mistakenly arrested on suspicion of bank robbery.

Bobby Fischer: Complete Games of the American World Chess Champion compiled and edited by Lou Hays. This is a personalized copy by Fischer to Laszlo Szabo.

The Cleveland Public Library has been selected to receive the 2007 Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections. This annual award is presented jointly by the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and Heritage Preservation.

The Cleveland Public Library is the first public library to receive this prestigious national award since its inception in 1999. Previous recipients have included art museums, historic sites, research libraries, and archives.
