Welcome to the New Website

General Reference DepartmentWelcome to CPL’s new web site! We’ll be bringing you news about happenings and unique collections at the library through this, our blog. You can find subject department information in About Us and information on branches and a FAQ are also found here. Check out the rest of the links at the top of the page to find other new features.

New Web Design

Great!!!!!! I enjoyed reading and hearing about what is new at the library. Having the links available is Awesome. I liked how information for YOU was avialble for contact but no information about the 4-H club was available. I wante dto know more. Information on the new Delicious web site--was very informative. Keep up the good work.

Increased site traffic

With the increased site traffic sure to be generated by an interactive format, please, please make Cleveland Public Library's amazing bound collection and electronic collection more accessible to the public savvy to access via our catalog. Electronic journal subscriptions need full MARC records and links from the catalog and databases such as EBSCOhost and Cambridge Scientific Abstracts need to have administrator options activated that allow smooth transition from citation results to CPL catalog holdings. Don't ignore CPL's WEB CATALOG.

New releases

One obvious opportunity to improve web access to the catalog would be to provide a list of newly added dvds and sound recordings under the NEW RELEASES category. A staff person should not have to go in an list new releases. It should be automatically generated from SIRSI.

Expanded Homestead Exemption

Thank you for the little article about the expanded Homestead Exemption. We received forms in the mail to fill out from the county but no background information or explanation of how much we would be saving.

I don't really care for the

I don't really care for the blog style taking over the majority of the website. Also where is the Unique Collections area and the events -- especially writers and readers, but other events as well??

I like the text only version

No extra graphics, I can resize the font as much as I'd like. Cool.

Blogging

This blogging feature is great!!!

Accessibility

Please make font size so it will become extra large.

Site Map

Where is the Site Map Link?

Harlan Ellison

I see that author Harlan Ellison is coming to the Cleveland Public Library on Friday, September 21st at 7:00. Why is there no mention of this on the new website?

Harlan Ellison appearance on the 21st

Click through the Subject Departments to Literature; you'll find it there.

New website format

I like the new look.

I would like to suggest that you start a "behind the scenes" photo and story section. For example how you prepare a new book for distribution and get them out to the branches. Let's see both people and items from your vast collections. Pictures would add the personal connection to the Peoples University".

Thank you.
Paul

Whatever

Give me a break. This site still is as user-UNfriendly as ever, at least there's county library. I'll bet you this comment gets deleted too, God forbid all taxpayer's opinions be heard.

On the subject of user interfaces...

There is no such thing as "user friendly". The fact that you saw fit to use it, indicates that you have no idea what you're talking about. User friendly is an outdated term that came from the heyday of the Macintosh era. Back when the Mac OS was the only OS that had a GUI so it could rightfully use the term, "user friendly". Because it was.

Today that computing hardware and software landscape is completely different. Mac OS could only only rightfully remain "user friendly" as long as it remained a stand alone system. As soon as networking (and shortly after that, the internet itself) was added to its feature set, "user friendly" went out the window.

Where web based UIs are concerned, the concept of "user friendliness" is completely and utterly meaningless. Why? Because there is no one interface that everyone is going to like. Some of us prefer pure textual content since that is the most direct way of absorbing intellectual information on the web. Others prefer a high level of graphic information, which the web is also good at providing. Still others feel that video is the only way to go. Other people never even look at web sites and rely purely on RSS feeds so that they can hit multiple sites in one simple digest (a timesaver). As a result of these varied opinions, it is not possible to have a "one site fits all" design. If you knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't have bothered to make the user-UNfriendly comment at all.

I have no idea whether or not this thread will be deleted. But I will admit that you and I (in responding to your troll) have contributed to the noise level here. Out of the current count of seven comments, two of them are purely useless noise. Of course, I'd argue that my comment is less useless than yours.

Taxpayers? Yeah... I take it you live in downtown Cleveland. In the inner city. Or in one of the elite new townhomes in the Tremont area. Because if you don't, then your tax dollars didn't do anything to contribute to this site. As far as your opinion, I'll let my comments on your post speak for itself.

Web designer speaks?

Wow, that response was so defensive and bloated that I'm led to believe the web designer of the new www.cpl.org themselves wrote it. And What a low blow to relegate a dissenting opinion to the realm of being a "troll" post. Grow up.

Um, the meaning of words change despite their origin. User friendly is a very relevant term. It means those who aren't necessarily members of the technocratic elite should be able to navigate this site without having a dissertation on what RSS or GUI means. And while we’re talking about the fact that one Graphical User Interface can never make ALL people satisfied, can a feature be added that allows users who prefer the old site to flip back to that template? Now that would have been cutting edge.

Like it

I like the new look. The top right corner date is a good tip-off to how timely the page will be.

Nice

A nice change, shows growth

To take a quote from the movie Pretty in Pink "it's hot, white hot."

I like the new look...my only complaint is that I cannot enlarge the font.

I hope that this can be corrected because the print is so small.

Accessibility Font Size

I agree. There should be a way to significantly enlarge the font.

in response to the many users wanting a larger text size, you should be able to do it from within your browser. with the free firefox browser, simply hold command (mac) or control (win) and depress the '+' key for bigger text and '-' key for smaller text. not perfect, but works well in a pinch.

as for the new site - congrats to cpl! it appears to be utilizing the Drupal architecture, which is a fantastic development of open-source content management system (cms) software. many kudos to the CPL staff for taking this step! Drupal is a free system of software that is under continuous development all over the world.
while i'm not 100% postive that CPL is utilizing Drupal, many visual signals indicate that to be the case.

a few other notable sites in cleveland are based on drupal - check them out!

Larger Text Size for those without Macs or Firefox Browsers ...

Is there a solution for the patrons who only have access to IE on public IBM compatible PC's?
