Cleveland Public Library’s International Connection

Here’s a fun fact: Cleveland Public Library has been a United Nations Depository library since 1947 and it is recognized as the official UN deposit library for the state of Ohio. The UN Deposit Library System is an important part of the United Nation’s outreach and education effort and consists of over 400 libraries in 140 different countries. This means that the Library receives official UN Documents that are archived in the Social Sciences Department  on the 5th Floor of the Louis Stokes Wing.

Saturday, October 24th is United Nations Day. The Social Sciences Department is celebrating United Nations Day by mounting a special book display and offering a free workshop on Friday October 23rd at 2:00 PM. The workshop will focus on information about the UN, the Model UN program for students, and research tips and tools that can help you learn more about international issues.

Each year the Social Sciences Department hosts a program centered around one of the subjects that falls under the United Nation’s broad umbrella of concerns and issues. This year’s program will tackle the topic of Prison Reform, a subject that is timely for the United States since we have the highest prison population in the entire world. The event which is FREE and open to the public, will take place Saturday November 7th from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Please contact your nearest branch library for a flyer about the event, or you can call the Social Sciences Department directly for more information: 216-623-2860.
