Before there were Ford Model T’s on the road or American Airways in the sky, railroads carried passengers from coast to coast. Cleveland Public Library has an amazing collection of resources on railroads, including but not limited to: books and periodicals on the history of railroad companies and unions, annual reports, trade magazines, and photographs.

Cleveland has some interesting railroad connections. In 1910, four of the seven large Ohio railroad systems had terminals in Cleveland. These four systems were: Baltimore and Ohio, Erie, Pennsylvania, and New York Central. According to an estimate based on the U.S. Census of 1910 (Table 1) there were approximately 788 conductors employed in Cleveland in 1915.

roboticsFor the third consecutive year, the Cleveland Public Library is partnering with the Tri-C Youth Technology Academy to present a Robotics Camp at five library branches: Collinwood, Hough, Rockport, South and Sterling.  Enterprising students from Cleveland neighborhoods are building Lego Mindstorm robots over the four week program as a way to spark their interest in science and technology while learning computer programming, engineering, math and teamwork.  Robotics as a field of study has grown exponentially in the past ten years.  The skills learned at Robotics Camp 2008 will serve the participants for years to come.  Although this year's robotics camp is already in full swing, you can prepare for next year by checking out some of the books listed below.

blu-ray emblemStarting July 7th, all CPL branches and the Audio-Video Department will have a collection of Blu-ray Discs for checkout. Blu-ray Discs are the latest in video technology, with the capability to hold five times the information as DVDs. A list of titles in the CPL Blu-ray collection can be found here. Note that these discs will not play in standard DVD players.

The new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. This technology will eventually take the place of the current DVDs. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. Here is a sample list of Blu-ray disc players.

As another school year comes to a close so comes the publication of high school yearbooks which most students will order. High school yearbooks are not only collections of shared memories by students and faculty, they also act as a historic record on local sports, education, and fashion. These yearbooks are sought-after reminders for many who long to view their past, are interested in searching for long-lost friends, or are conducting genealogy research.

The Cleveland Public Library has collected many Cleveland high school yearbooks over the years. If you are interested in viewing these yearbooks please contact the Social Sciences Department for help in locating these reference items. It may take a day or longer to retrieve yearbooks from storage, so please call in advance of your visit. Also the Ohio Genealogical Society owns various Ohio high school yearbooks. A list of yearbooks they carry are available on their site. The Social Sciences Department gladly accepts donations of yearbooks for public, private and parochial schools located within the city of Cleveland. Here is a PDF file presenting a list of yearbooks the library currently owns.

Bone Thugs, Wings Over Jordan, Bull "Moose" Jackson, Screamin' Jay HawkinsIn May of 2002, President George W. Bush, by way of an official Presidential Proclamation, declared June as Black Music Month. During this month Americans are to celebrate the rich contributions made to our culture by "highlighting the enduring legacy of African-American musicians, singers, and composers." Here in Cleveland we can certainly take this idea one step further and celebrate the many fantastic contributors those of which have come from the citizens of our fair city. In previous posts (1,2,3) we highlighted several Cleveland-area African American Jazz musicians who's careers were quite successful. Listed below are those artists along with several others connected to the city of Cleveland:
